I have scale - What can I do now?

It's not the news you want, but the truth is there is no immediate antidote to scale removal. All water has the potential to scale particularly if the 'wrong' conditions are permitted. This fountain maintained by the team at NASA has even been allowed to scale out. But what can be done now?

The scale did not form overnight and will not go away overnight. It is also likely that it may never go away completely. The steps that you can take to improve the scale deposits are as follows. Use a anti scale product such as Natural Chemistrys ScaleFree or Jacks Magic. We use ScaleFree but ARE experimenting with the Jacks Magic product line.

When no scale exists, we recommend the prescribed dosages and frequencies on the bottle for preventive measures. When scale does exist, consider doubling the amounts and frequency. We have a pool that we are using a full bottle of ScaleFree on each month. The pool was neglected for a couple years and we are trying to get it back. The more is better theory seems to be working.

There is also a devise solution that is proving to be excellent in prevention and is showing signs of reversal on pools that have some recent scale formation. It's called the 'Lux Capacitor' (yes we are Back To The Future fans) and it creates what is known as structured water. The device has had noticeable effects on pools with recent and light scale as well as prevented pools from scaling in the first place. Learn more about the 'Lux Capactior' here.

Beyond additives and possibly structured water, keep your pH below 7.2. High pH is the number one factor of water 'salting out' or scaling. If you can maintain a 7.0 or 7.1 it will go a very long way.

Use a prefilter on your hose such as a Hayward 'Bobby' or if you have one, a whole house treatment system for your pool fill water. If you can stop the minerals and / or metals from going into the pool they can't damage your pool and you will have an easier time with prevention.

Lasty is a bi-annual use of Revive. It is a product you spray on the water surface with a garden hose dispenser. It should be allowed to sit for a couple days and then vacuum the white residue on the pool floor to WASTE. Spring and Fall this should be performed.

If you are practicing these procedures, you will notice the water that comes off your filter when cleaning will be a milky color. We believe this to be resolidified minerals being caught and rinsing off and out getting out of the pool.

Remember: pH 7.2 or lower, chlorine at 1.5-3ppm, water temp below 92, and get a prefilter for your fill water. If you would like any chemicals or a Lux Capacitor mentioned above, please click HERE.
