Does it cost more to install a fiberglass pool out of town?
That's a great question. The answer is...it doesn't have that much bearing on the installation cost. Three reasons:
1. Efficiency
Believe it or not our efficiency increases out of town. I think one of the main reasons is that our guys simply have heightened awareness for the project when it's out of town. They tend to work quicker because they want to get done and go home. They know that if something is or goes wrong it HAS to be fixed immediately, so they are more careful. They also don't forget much...if anything. When we are "at home" it's not as big of a deal to "get it tomorrow." The team as a whole can be to be less diligent during the morning pack up if we are just driving across town and that forethought (or lack thereof) shows in the field.
2. Production Cost
Equipment and raw materials costs are less out of town. In town (Central Ohio to be specific) the cost of gravel, concrete, and equipment rental if needed are substantially more. Limestone gravel is nearly double the cost than in more rural areas. That single difference in gravel cost is enough to offset the travel expenses associated with installing out of town.
3. Easier Folks
I live in suburbia myself, so I don't want to sound mean BUT when we are installing a pool in a rural area (i.e. NOT Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland, or greater Nashville) the people there are just nicer and easier to work with. It is not uncommon for dump truck drivers and concrete truck drivers to work till dark if we need them with no push back. On the flipside, in town ... needing something after 5:30pm can be near impossible. The neighbor factor can be easier in the country. We see far less "Pool Envy" and "Not on MY Grass" from neighbors in the country. That easier going mentality directly impacts our production rate and the teams mental condition. When everyone is happy – everything goes better.
4. Airplane
That's right...We bought an airplane. Up until 2012 our business plan called for an additional location opening in Cincinnati and then on to Cleveland to install pools. We had been traveling back and forth with "Rental" airplanes and that had worked well for us. After final costing on the new office it became clear that the additional location was going to cost MORE than owning a plane. In addition, the airplane would allow us to serve more clients, serve them better, serve them more efficiently, and across the entire state of Ohio and surroundings rather than just one market. That realization made purchasing an aircraft a pretty easy decision.
The items that ARE affected by distance include freight and landscaping / concrete. The freight cost of the pool is a "static variable" if you will as the cost to haul a fiberglass pool from the distribution yard to a given job site is done by the mile. That said, the farther you are from the factory or a distribution yard the more that cost goes up regardless of the team installing it. While the cost to install the pool is relatively unaffected by the travel, the concrete and landscaping can be. The reason is simple. We only need to come out one or two days to install the pool and the systems for it. The concrete and hardscaping often can take several weeks depending on the complexity. This can mean we may become less competitive than a local firm on larger scale living-scapes. It is for this reason that we often will help with the designing and layout of the project as well as assist in guiding a local firm to complete the surrounding areas with our client. It ultimately makes the job more affordable for our customers, and we get to install more pools...which is what we really excel at.
